TkMAME is not like conventional binary executable programs, instead TkMAME is distributed as source code and run through an interpreter. There are several advantages for doing this:

• The source code is available for you to look at, learn from and modify to suit your own needs.
• The download size is considerably smaller than it would be if compiled into an executable.
• After the interpreter is correctly installed, you can double click on the icon which represents the source code file and it will run TkMAME just as if it were an executable.

Before running TkMAME you must first install the interpreter which can be downloaded from the links provided below.  The executables for Windows are self-extracting and will install itself.  Most Unix/Linux users will already have the Tcl/Tk interpreter installed on their system. If you are unsure contact your system adminstrator.  In case your Unix/Linux system does not have Tcl/Tk installed, you may download the correct binaries or source from the link provided below.

If you are running Windows 3.1 you will also need to download the following TCL1680.DLL, and put it in your system directory.

After you have successfully downloaded and installed the Tcl/Tk interpreter, you may then download and unzip the version of TkMAME you wish to install.  When new versions of TkMAME are released, you only need to update this file.  There is no need to update the Tcl/Tk interpreter.  For TkMAME, there is only one file to download which works on both the Windows and Linux/Unix platforms.  The available versions of TkMAME are:

IMPORTANT!  This version requires you to patch Tcl/Tk in order to get .PNG support.  Unix users can download the patch here, and Windows users just need to run this.
